Connecting the main east-west roadways with Fire Island, the Robert Moses Causeway - once known as the Captree State Parkway - affords motorists a beautiful view of Great South Bay. As with the Meadowbrook and Wantagh parkways, the Robert Moses Causeway is much more congested during the summer months, but traffic always seems to move at a pretty good clip.

Safety is compromised greatly at its northern terminus as the Robert Moses Causeway merges into the Southern State Parkway. In order to reach the Sagtikos State Parkway, motorists must cross two lanes of heavy eastbound traffic on the Southern State Parkway for the left-hand exit. This review strongly recommends construction of a direct flyover ramp from the northbound Robert Moses Causeway to the northbound Sagtikos State Parkway.

One unbuilt part of the causeway is a second span across Fire Island Inlet. It definitely would have been built had the Ocean Parkway been extended east along Fire Island to Smith Point, but it does not look like it will happen. Still, it would help exiting traffic from Robert Moses State Park.
