At the time of this writing, the Whitestone Expressway is a work in progress, and will continue to be so for the next two years. Already, significant improvements have been made to the pavement, signing, lighting and landscaping, though there remains much work to be done. It appears that more work needs to be done with upgrading the sewers, as the expressway's sewer system could not handle the excessive rains of the summer of 2004.

Safety remains a significant problem along the expressway. Antiquated left-hand entrance and exit ramps at EXIT 16 (Cross Island Parkway), part of the legacy of the old Whitestone Parkway (1939-1963) remain a problem. More recent work on the expressway has failed to address the need for extended acceleration / deceleration (or exit-only) lanes. Excessive speeds and weaving traffic only makes matters worse. On a positive note, the NYSDOT is in the process of replacement the 65-old-year steel-deck bridge that carries the northbound lanes of I-678 over the Flushing River.
