This is one highway that should have been built as a full freeway, but Suffolk County ran into fiscal problems during the mid-1970's before this could happen. For this reason, Nicolls Road is just not as safe as it could be. The sudden red lights after a 55 MPH stretch of several miles contributes to numerous accidents (some of them fatal) on the highway. Now some 30 years later, the county is drafting plans to finally convert Nicolls Road to a freeway. We can only hope.

Many of the signs also could be larger. Instead of the county-issue small green signs, there should be more of the NYSDOT-issue signs at the NY 25 (Middle Country Road) and NY 27 (Sunrise Highway) interchanges.
