Take a ride into the future! After a decade and a half of construction, engineers have succeeded in building an eight-to-ten lane freeway underneath downtown Boston. As the "Liberty Tunnel" is brand-new, the pavement is in excellent condition, and the tiling is spotless. The tunnel is mostly safe, though motorists fail to heed the posted 40 MPH speed limit, making merging a bit challenging.

Even with the success of the new Central Artery tunnel, motorists do give up the close-up view of downtown Boston that they enjoyed on the elevated Artery. Those living and working alongside the Artery will disagree, as they will heap the benefits of a new park on the former elevated right-of-way. As a compromise, motorists do get a beautiful new signature span (the Leonard P. Zakim-Bunker Hill Memorial Bridge) to replace the dilapidated - and now demolished - High Bridge.
