More than anything else, the Wilbur Cross Parkway provides an effective alternative to the congested I-95 (Connecticut Turnpike) and I-91 through the New Haven area. While it lacks the beauty and history of the Merritt Parkway, its companion to the south, the Wilbur Cross Parkway still is historical in its own right. The late 1940's design attributes provides hints of early Interstate design, and some of the bridges indeed are beautiful. Be sure to see the West Rock Tunnel, the only vehicular land tunnel in New England.

Like the Merritt Parkway, the Wilbur Cross Parkway is compromised in terms of congestion and safety. The parkway needs an additional travel lane in each direction, but active preservation efforts likely will prevent this from ever happening. Acceleration and deceleration lanes should be built where appropriate to improve safety.
